Drywall Cracks: Cosmetic or a Warning Sign?
Every house develops cracks. Drywall is a brittle skin over a frame that moves a little with temperature, humidity and time. The question is not whether you have cracks, but whether they are stable.
Cracks that are usually cosmetic
- Hairline cracks at the corners of doors and windows. These are stress points in any wall.
- Straight cracks along a seam, where two sheets meet and the tape has let go.
- Thin cracks where wall meets ceiling, often seasonal.
- Nail or screw pops: small round bumps where a fastener has backed out.
These are repaired by opening the crack slightly, retaping where needed, applying joint compound in thin coats, sanding, matching the texture and painting. Done properly, the repair disappears.
Signs that deserve a closer look
- A crack wide enough to slide a coin into, or one that is wider at one end
- Cracks that run diagonally across a wall, or continue from the wall into the ceiling
- One side of the crack sitting higher than the other
- A crack that returns soon after a proper repair
- Doors or windows nearby that have started to stick or go out of square
- Matching cracks in the floor tile or the exterior stucco
Any of these can point to movement in the structure. That is a question for a licensed contractor or a structural engineer before anyone patches the surface.
Signs of water, not movement
- Yellow or brown staining around the crack
- Bubbling or peeling paint, or tape that has gone soft
- A sagging ceiling panel
- A musty smell, or drywall that feels soft when pressed
In South Florida this is the common one. A roof, a pipe or an AC drain line is leaking somewhere above or behind. The leak has to be fixed by the right trade and the area dried before the drywall is replaced. If the wall is damp or moldy, call our sister company DryMiami first.
A simple way to track a crack
Mark both ends lightly in pencil, write the date, and take a photo with a ruler next to it. Check again in a few months. A crack that has not grown is almost always cosmetic.
For the cosmetic ones, see our drywall repair page, or send photos with your list.
